NEWS UPDATE: OINP REGIONAL IMMIGRATION PILOT HELD ITS FIRST DRAW

Ontario conducted its first Provincial Nomination Program draw targeting applicants with job offers in three rural communities. The province invites 64 skilled workers to apply for a provincial nomination last May 25. Immigration candidates who have a profile in the Expression of Interest (EOI) system received an invitation from the Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (OINP). They will be registered for the Regional Immigration Pilot and can now apply for the Employer Job Offer – Foreign Worker Stream. The Regional Immigration Pilot launched in 2020 and held the first draw of its kind by Ontario. This is the third EOI draw since its launching in April of last year.

What is the Ontario Regional Immigration Pilot?

Despite the fact that Ontario is the densest and most attractive province for newcomers, it still needs to fill in gaps to support its rural communities. This is why the province came up with the Regional Immigration Pilot Program. Established to help the struggling labour shortages, the Regional Immigration Pilot backs up three rural communities. These are Chatham-Kent, Cornwall, and Quinte West/Belleville. Ontario allows allocating 150 nominations this year for skilled workers and to help the settlement of immigrants.

You may be able to get a provincial nomination through the Regional Immigration Pilot if you qualify in any of the OINP Employer Job Offer streams. Also, if your full-time employment offer is in one of the engaged communities.

Under the OINP Employer Job Offer stream, there are three sub-categories, namely:

  • Foreign Worker – for skilled foreign workers with a job offer
  • International Student – graduates from a Canadian college or university with a skilled job offer
  • In-Demand Skills – for employees in agriculture, construction and related fields that have labour shortages in Ontario

Acquiring a nomination from a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a good advantage on your way to Canadian permanent residency. Provincial Nominations manifests to the Canadian federal government that a candidate is eligible and a key in labour market requirements. In lieu, the federal government has the concluding decision in all immigration program applications. The Regional Immigration Pilot Program will operate for two years until it receives an assessment. It should meet its vision and the progress that the communities need. From there on, the program can be continued or cancelled, relying on its execution and results.
