Latest News: CANADA VISITORS CAN NOW APPLY FOR WORK PERMITS WHILE IN CANADA UNTIL FEBRUARY 28, 2025
On February 28, the Government of Canada, on the IRCC website, sent a notice about extending the temporary policy by two (2) years which allows visitors in Canada to continue applying for work permits while residing in the country.
What this means is that visitors in Canada who receive a valid job offer will continue to be able to apply for and obtain a work permit without having to leave the country.
Initially, the temporary policy was due for expiration on February 28, 2023. However, this COVID-era temporary public policy has been extended by two (2) years until February 28, 2025.
This policy would cushion the effects of labour shortages suffered by Canadian businesses as visitors will continue providing an employment option for Canadian employers.
Before the introduction of the temporary public policy, people who wanted to work in Canada had to apply for a work permit before they arrived. Then, they would have to leave the country to obtain a work permit if they were in visitor status when one was granted. The necessity to leave Canada is eliminated by this policy.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE UNDER THE TEMPORARY PUBLIC POLICY
Any visitor looking to benefit from this policy must;
- have valid status in Canada as a visitor on the day they apply
- have a job offer that is supported by a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment
- apply for an employer-specific work permit no later than February 28, 2025
- meet all other standard admissibility criteria
Applicants who currently have visitor status but who have held a valid work permit within the last 12 months can follow these special instructions to obtain temporary work authorization to start working for their new employer before their work permit application is approved.Thank you for reading!
