NEWS UPDATE: APPLICANTS WITH CONFIRMATION OF PERMANENT RESIDENCE CAN NOW TRAVEL TO CANADA

As of June 21, 2021 approved immigrants for permanent residence can now travel to Canada amidst specific border regulations. Individuals with valid Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) can enter the country. With a number of 23,000 COPR holders in line overseas, they can finally complete the final steps on their arrival to Canada. The federal government confirmed this through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. An announcement was also made on the said date at 10 AM Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Included in the announcement is that the COPR should be valid and not expired upon entry to Canada. For the latter or candidates with expired COPR, IRCC is working to revalidate and reissue their new COPRs. Applicants who received Confirmation of Permanent Residence after March 18, 2020, were not exempt from travel restrictions. For them to complete the arrival process, they must meet another exemption. And as a result, they waited more than a year to finalize their immigration steps but were still not declared officially permanent residents even with the document.

Being issued a COPR is the dream of every hopeful immigrant to Canada. The document means IRCC approved your immigration application. You were able to meet the program criteria you applied for, paid necessary fees, and validated with health and security assessments. With a COPR, you are on your way to begin a new life in Canada.

With the global pandemic, 23,000 COPR owners got stuck in the process. According to the government of Canada, these Confirmation of Permanent Residence holders were not able to travel due to the enforced travel restrictions since March 2020. Until today, only those who held a valid COPR issued on or before March 18, 2020, were exempt from Canada’s COVID-19 travel restrictions. Those who got their COPR after March 18, 2020, can only come to Canada if they meet one of Canada’s other travel exemptions or were a resident of the United States and were moving to Canada to settle permanently.

The Canadian government also announced that you should not travel to Canada if you have an expired Confirmation of Permanent Residence document. Nevertheless, IRCC noted that they would share information on when and how you can renew a COPR eventually. It is highly recommended that expired COPR holders must not book any flight or attempt to travel to Canada unless a new COPR releases.

COPRs validity is up to one year from issuance. The applicant’s passport and other details are bound with it. Aside from Confirmation of Permanent Residence holders, many travellers cannot enter Canada due to Covid-19 restrictions, which cause most documents to expire. These individuals do not need to go through the immigration process again if proven included in the exemptions. However, their papers must still be valid in order to travel to Canada. Travel guidelines and safety measures such as quarantine guidelines will still apply upon their arrival. For those fully vaccinated, will be exempt from the quarantine requirement as announced by the federal government.Would you like to receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence in Canada too?
